Boy Scout RaftingStarting in the spring of 2010!

Rafting on the Stanislaus River in Northern California has always been popular among boy scout and girl scout groups, and it is no wonder why. The section of the Stanislaus we offer is a beautiful meandering 8.5 mile stretch of water that includes some of the most beautiful and preserved scenery in California. Aside from this, scout groups are able to enjoy viewing a wide array of wildlife, including threatened species, as well as a vast array of Northern California plant life. And while the scouts have always had a great time on the river, this year we are tailoring a program to help them even more!

Merit Badge Details

We have set up a program that will allow scouts to go a long way torward earning an Environmental Science Badge through the Boy Scouts of America. Aside from our trip (which is described in detail below) we can help in the following areas of obtaining the badge:

•Going over what an ecosystem is and what it involves.
•Showing firsthand what water pollutants can do to wildlife and plant populations.
•Show and help photograph areas impacted by water erosion.
•Show a salmon spawning project implemented by the Army Corp. of Engineers to raise Chinook Salmon numbers.
•Help with ideas that will aid scouts in fulfilling the writing and idea portions of the badge.

The Rafting Trip

The actual trip along the Stanislaus River is not only popular among scouts, but also among families. The river is an ideal spot for amateur rafters to get a feel for river rafting while still experiencing the excitement of mild whitewater. Trip highlights include the class II Russian Rapid, the bluffs area where you can see swallow nests along the river bluffs, Lover's Leap (a cliff that majestically juts up to the left of the river), Sweep Rapid, and a number of public parks where your group can enjoy their lunch in the shade.

With your trip comes a number of items including:

•Rafting equipment including personal flotation devices, sturdy paddles, and a heavy-duty commercial quality raft.

•A safety talk that covers the basics of rafting, basic on local plant and animals, and what to expect in detail on your trip.

•Free parking, free group photos, and a free shuttle back at the end of your trip.

The special scout trip also includes time with a certified Boy Scout instructor that will cover the Stanislaus River and Environmental Issues more in depth!
